Reminiscent of the overlapping watermarks of waves lapping up on the sand, the lace stitch pattern is simple to knit. This stitch pattern, which I originally saw on a commercial garment in a store, is the inspiration that began the Tempest collection. Several of the designs in the book feature variations on this stitch pattern. I enjoyed figuring out how to knit it using only a quickly snapped, detail shot on my phone. Then I began experimenting with the placement of the increases and decreases to stretch the pattern, compact the pattern, reverse the pattern—any variation I could think of.
