Construction

Both placemat and table runner are worked in a slip stitch pattern, then stitches are picked up along selvedges (each done separately) and edging is worked to frame the piece.

Placemat: 18×12″ (46 x 30 cm).

Fingering weight;
Choose two sets of three colours each (a light, medium and dark tone), and a seventh colour for the border (MC).
Yardage for two placemats + one runner: 680 yd / 625 m MC; 270 yd / 245 m each C1, C2, C3; 135 yd / 125 m each C4, C5, C6.
Yardage for one placemat (runner): MC 170 (350) yd / 155 (320) m MC; C1 55 (160) yd / 50 (150) m C1, C2, C3; C4 30 (80) yd / 25 (75) m C4, C5, C6.

Substitution Notes

The original yarn is a fingering weight yarn designed for colourwork. It’s 100% wool and is not superwash. It’s a “sticky” yarn and the fibres will begin to hold together on their own through use. Suitable replacements are lofty, traditional wools.

30 sts and 74 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Woven Pattern on larger needles, blocked.
