Side view of feet standing on wooden floor with one foot pointed. Socks are charcoal grey with broken stripes worked in three desaturated pastel shades.
Front view of feet standing with heels and toes together. Broken stripes are worked at even intervals from cuff to toes.
Side view of feet with skinny jeans tucked into handknit socks. Socks are worked top down with a heel flap construction, but no gusset to disrupt the striping.
Back view of feet standing on tippy toes showing heel flap construction of socks. Stripes of dotted lines can be seen on legs and soles of feet.
Detail shot of the cuffs and upper legs of handknit socks being worn. The broken stripes of contrasting colours are worked in two rounds each.
Side view of a pair of feet on wood floor with the heel of the closer foot raised off floor. The striped stitch pattern continues unaffected by the sock construction because there's no side gusset even though there's a heel flap construction.

Drumline Socks

$10 CAD

One, two, three, four! These smart socks proceed with strict regularity, slipped stitches defining the rhythm of an unchanging pattern repeat. The band heel means no gusset, and so no change in stitch count, just a steady march down to the toes.

Construction

Worked from the top down, the heel flap is worked in rows with a short-row heel turn. Stitches are picked up on each side of the heel flap and the foot is worked in the round with the same number of stitches as the leg. Gender-neutral patterning and a full range of nine sizes will let you knit these for everyone you know.

The original yarn is a luxuriously soft sock yarn with cashmere and merino. Choose a fingering weight sock yarn. Look for a wool blend yarn with some nylon, mohair or silk for strength and a tight twist and multiple plies for a sock that will last.
