Summer Workshops

Summer Workshops

I’ve been knitting my little fingers to the bone to get ready for a whole series of knitting workshops at River City Yarns in Edmonton starting next week. When we moved 1 1/2 years ago, you may recall that all of my workshop samples went missing. They never showed up and it breaks my heart every time I think of all the samples, Addi Turbo needles and finished items that are lost. I had everything I needed for each workshop conveniently read more

Teaching in Edmonton

Teaching in Edmonton

I’ll be teaching knitting workshops at River City Yarns in Edmonton this summer at the end of July and beginning of August. In order to offer their customers the right mix of classes, RCY has asked them for feedback. What a great idea! If you would like to take one of my classes in Edmonton please take the survey and let them know what you want. I look forward to seeing you there.

Two-Handed Two-Colour Knitting

Two-Handed Two-Colour Knitting

I’m slogging away on my Rockin’ Sock Club stranded socks. I say “slogging” only because I’m finding the knitting awkward and I really need to do something about my technique. My hands cramp up and I’m having a hard time tensioning the yarn with my left hand. But … woohoo! …  I just got the last spot in a workshop with Margaret Radcliffe. Margaret wrote The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques and she’ll be at my LYS, Urban Yarns later this month. read more

It’s a helluva town!

It’s a helluva town!

Our trip to New York was wonderful. I ate up every minute of it and so enjoyed wandering through the various neighbourhoods. Absolutely no knitting was accomplished on the trip because I hardly sat down, but I did manage to pop in to a few of the LYSs. They were all selectively stocked with exquisite handpainted and luxury yarns. There weren’t any overfull shelves or tottering piles of yarn up to the rafters. Considering the smaller locations, it was interesting to note that they seemed to offer a much narrower selection per square foot than many other shops I’ve visited. read more

I cheated

I cheated

I bought a pair of machine-knit socks made with Regia’s Kaffe Fassett Exotic, colourway Ember. I popped into Dressew today to see if they’ve had a new shipment of discount yarn. I’m sure everyone on the lower mainland is familiar with the great deals that can be had at Dressew. For those not in the know, an American distributor decided to unload a bunch of quality yarn so we’ve been seeing some hugely discounted Rowan, Nashua Handknits, and Regia among others. No new shipments, but I hadn’t notice the Regia machine knit sock samples before. read more

No Excuses

No Excuses

I’m trying to teach my son to not always have an excuse for when something goes wrong. I emphasize accepting responsibility for one’s own actions. I need to model that behavior. Sooo … it’s been a while, and I apologize for the silence. Both Ruby and Devan are finished and were delivered to Urban Yarns as shop samples. I wanted to share with you my washing experience with Devan. First I have a confession. It was actually my Mum who knit read more

From July 26 to August 2 River City Yarns in Edmonton is sponsoring a whole series of my workshops. They are just about to open a second location on the Southside and I’ll be dividing my time equally between their two shops. read more

The workshops at River City Yarns in Edmonton were wonderful. I had great fun teaching them – I really enjoy sharing with other knitters. I think my new favourite workshop is Making Marvelous Mittens. Cynthia at River City Yarns gave it that name and I think I’ll continue to use it. We experiment with the various effects possible with knitting with a double strand of self-patterning yarn. I had a great read more

With all the wonderful hand-painted yarns out there these days, I wanted to show you that Bee’s Knees Knits patterns look equally wonderful knit up in them as opposed to self-patterning yarns. Painted yarns that stripe a bit are the most effective, but you could also use a truely variegated yarn if you like that effect. Just use a yarn that will give you the right gauge and pretty much anything works – even solids. This is Lorna’s Laces Seaside paired with read more
