The Double Bind-Off is a decorative bind off similar to the three needle bind off but it results in two columns of knit stitches that lay nice and flat.
Here’s a short video tutorial demonstrating the technique. And for those of you who prefer a quick photo tutorial as a reminder, just scroll down.
The Breakers cowl in my book Tempest uses this technique. Feather Cardigan Wrap, a pattern that was exclusively designed for River City Yarns.
To work the bind off you’ll need three needles, one of which must be a double pointed needle. Stitches are created by alternating a single knit stitch, then a single purl stitch from opposite ends of the double pointed needle.
Hold both needles parallel to one another with wrong sides together.
Using the double pointed needle (dpn), knit 1 from the front needle.
Swing the dpn counter-clockwise and slide it through the stitch so the opposite end is ready to be used; with yarn in front (wyif), purl 1 from back needle—2 sts on dpn.
*Swing dpn clockwise and slide it through the stitches again so the front end is ready to be used; with yarn in back (wyib), knit 1 from the front needle, then pass the middle stitch over the last stitch worked on the dpn—2 sts remain on dpn.
Swing dpn counter-clockwise and slide it through the stitches so the back end is ready to be used; wyif, purl 1 from back needle, then pass the middle stitch over the last stitch worked on the dpn—2 sts remain on dpn.
Repeat from Step 4 until no stitches remain on the left-hand needles and 2 stitches remain on the dpn, k2tog. Break yarn leaving an 8” (20 cm) tail and enlarge your final stitch until the cut end of the tail pulls free.
