Tip Toe Up Socks

Day four of new pattern releases. For the first eight days of November we’ll be releasing a new pattern each day. Check back often to see more.

I love teaching this toe-up sock as a workshop and thought it would be marvelous to package the workshop into a skill-building pattern. This is a great basic pattern that you can use as a canvas for your creative ideas. Try different stitch patterns or stripes. See where your imagination takes you. The pattern comes in five sizes including baby, child, preteen/Adult S, M, L and is written for your preferred choice of needles: four or five dpns, two short circulars or one long circular needle for Magic Loop.

One of the main highlights of the sock is that it has a completely replaceable heel and toe with full instructions on how to replace them.

We begin the sock with step-by-step instructions for the Turkish cast-on. After the foot is worked, waste yarn is inserted as a placeholder to reserve a spot for the heel which is completed at the end. A stretchy “sewn” bind off is recommended and instructions are included for using your knitting needles instead of a yarn needle for the bind off.

After the stitches are reclaimed from the waste yarn placeholder, the heel is then worked similar to a top-down toe and the opening is grafted shut. Again, instead of threading your yarn needle to do the grafting, step-by-step instructions guide you through grafting on the needles.

My knitterly mind stubbornly wouldn’t wrap itself around the conventional sewn bind off and grafting. With these modified instructions to work the techniques with knitting needles, not only do I understand the technique, I can remember it without pulling out instructions each time.

I used Beautiful Bluefaced Leicester Sock from Kattikloo Fiber Studio on Salt Spring Island. Fiona dyes gorgeous colours and we’re running a cross promotion. You’ll receive a 20% discount code in your pattern that you can use towards Kattikloo sock yarn for your project. How great is that!
